Imran Khan granted bail in Section 144 violation case

ISLAMABAD: An additional district and sessions court in Islamabad has granted bail to former prime minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan in the Section 144 violation case, ARY News reported on Friday. According to details, the former premier appeared before court of Additional Sessions Judge Zafar Iqbal, seeking bail in a case pertaining to the violation of Section 144 in Islamabad during the party’s rally on August 20. During the hearing, Imran Khan’s counsel said that the case was registered only on a revenge basis. Rupee strengthens against dollar in interbank

KARACHI: Pakistani rupee continued to recover in the interbank, extending its gains against the US dollar for the sixth consecutive session, ARY News reported on Friday. According to the Forex Association of Pakistan (FAP), the local currency was changing hands at Rs228.50 per dollar after gaining Rs1.63 during intraday trading in interbank. Meanwhile, the greenback was being traded at Rs227 to Rs229 in the open market, the association added. The rupee has been recovering for the sixth consecutive session after falling close to an all-time low of Rs239.94 on Sept 22. A day earlier, the Pakistani rupee continued its upward trend , gaining Rs2.45 against US dollar in the interbank market. Farmers’ protest in Islamabad enters third day

ISLAMABAD: The protest of farmers in Islamabad who have gathered under the umbrella of Pakistan Kissan Ittehad on Friday entered the third day, ARY News reported. The farmers are demanding the restoration of the previous tubewell electricity tariff of Rs5.3 per unit and abolishing all taxes and adjustments. The administration has summoned heavy contingents of police as the protesting farmers tried to march towards D-Chowk. Several rounds of talks were held with the protesting farmers but remained unsuccessful. The demonstrators demanded an end to the black marketing of fertilisers and reduction of the urea rate. IRSA forecast 18 pc water shortage in Rabi cropping season

ISLAMABAD: The Indus River System Authority (IRSA) has forecast 18 per cent of water shortage during the forthcoming Rabi cropping season, ARY News reported on Thursday. The session of the advisory committee of the Indus River System Authority (IRSA) was held today. During the session, the officials predicted 18 per cent of water shortage to be faced by the country during the Rabi cropping season. According to the declaration, 30.2 million acre-feet of water will be available for crops. 16.23 million acre-feet of water will be available for Punjab crops, 12.24 million acre-feet for Sindh, 0.7 million acre-feet of water for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and one million acre-feet of water for Balochistan crops. CPPA advises NEPRA to raise power tariff by Rs0.22

The Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) on Thursday recommended the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) raise the power tariff by Rs0.22 per unit in fuel adjustment charges for August, ARY News reported. According to the application by CPPA, 38.10% of electricity in August was produced using hydraulic power, while 15.39% by coal. 7.27% of electricity was produced using furnace oil, 12.49% by RLNG, 13.34% by Nuclear power plants, and 9.36% by using local gas. The per unit price of coal-produced electricity was Rs20.54, furnace oil Rs35.61, local gas Rs10.49 while power produced using RLNG cost Rs24.72 per unit. A total of 13.638 billion units of electricity were produced in August, the CPPO application read. The average production cost for August was Rs10.11 per unit and the reference fuel cost was set at Rs9.89. Islamabad registers 73 more dengue cases

ISLAMABAD: The federal capital has reported 73 more dengue cases in the last 24 hours taking the total tally of cases to 2,235 in the current season, ARY News reported quoting District Health Officer (DHO) Islamabad.  According to the statistics provided by the DHO Islamabad, 41 of the total 73 cases were reported in rural areas of the capital while the rest 32 were reported from urban premises. Overall 1,336 dengue cases have been reported in rural and 899 have emerged from urban areas of Islamabad. Karachi: Four children among six injured in gas leak fire

KARACHI: Six members of a family, four of them children, received burn injuries in a fire that broke out after a gas-leak explosion in their house in Miran Naka area of Karachi’s Lyari, ARY News reported on Thursday. Cabinet allows import of 300,000MT urea for Rabi season

ISLAMABAD: The federal cabinet has allowed the Trading Corporation of Pakistan (TCP) to import 300,000 metric tonnes of urea on a government-to-government basis for the upcoming Rabi season. The federal cabinet, which met in Islamabad with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in the chair, gave this approval on the recommendations of the Ministry of Industrial Production. The cabinet also approved constitution of a steering committee, comprising all the relevant federal ministries, provincial governments, including Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Kashmir under Living Indus Initiative. It emphasized on including the initiative in the curriculum of schools and colleges to create awareness at the grass root level. Islamabad reports 90 more dengue cases, tally reaches 2,162

ISLAMABAD: The federal capital reported 90 more dengue cases in the last 24 hours taking the total tally of cases to 2,162 in the current season, ARY News reported citing District Health Officer (DHO) Islamabad.  According to the statistics provided by the DHO Islamabad, 49 of the total 90 cases were reported in rural areas of the capital while the rest 41 were reported from urban premises. Armed forces continue relief, rescue operation in flood-affected area

Armed forces including Pakistan Army, Navy and Air Force continue carrying out relief and rescue operations in flood-affected areas of the country, ARY News reported.  Pakistan Navy’s four flood relief centres and 18 central collection points have collected and distributed over 1805 tonnes of food, 6553 tents, and 7,35,263 litres of mineral water among flood-affected people. According to the National Flood Relief Coordination Centre (NFRCC) at least 25,973 people have taken refuge in 22 Navy camps. At least 15,568 people have been rescued by 23 emergency response teams of the Pakistan Navy, the NFRCC told. The Emergency Response teams of the Pakistan Navy have 54 motorized boats, and 2 hover crafts, while two helicopters are assigned to rescue people in Sindh. Dengue cases continue to rise in Karachi

KARACHI: 254 new cases of dengue virus were reported in Karachi as the provincial capital remained in grip of the mosquito-borne disease, ARY News reported on Monday. According to the provincial health department, the majority number of cases in Karachi have been reported in district Korangi, where 112 patients have been infected by the virus during the past 24 hours. Six martyred as Pakistan Army helicopter crashes in Harnai: ISPR

RAWALPINDI: Six personnel of Pakistan Army were martyred as a helicopter crash in Balochistan’s Harnai, ARY News reported, quoting Inter-Services Public Relations.  According to ISPR, the helicopter crashed in Harnai, last night and as a result six of army personnel including two pilots were martyred. SHIKARPUR: Two dacoits were shot dead in alleged police encounter in Shikarpur on Monday, ARY News reported.   According to SSP Shiraz Nazir, the encounter took place near Shikarpur’s Rukk Link Road, where dacoits and police exchanged fire. In retaliatory fire, two alleged dacoits were shot dead, the SSP said and added weapons were recovered from their custody. Pakistan Navy, Air force continue rescue, relief operations in flood-hit areas

Pakistan Navy’s four flood relief centres and 18 central collection points have collected and distributed over 1758 tonnes of food, 6407 tents, and 7,27,848 litres of mineral water among flood-affected people, ARY News reported. According to the National Flood Relief Coordination Centre (NFRCC) at least 25,097 people have taken refuge in 19 Navy camps. At least 15,565 people have been rescued by 23 emergency response teams of the Pakistan Navy, the NFRCC told. The Emergency Response teams of the Pakistan Navy have 54 motorized boats, and 2 hover crafts, while two helicopters are assigned to rescue people in Sindh. The NFRCC told that a total of 478 people have been rescued via 70 flights of the Navy helicopter while 5258 ration bags were also distributed using it. Pakistan Navy also established 82 medical camps which have treated over 89,989 patients so far, the NFRCC told. World Bank ‘envisaging’ $2bn financing for Pakistan flood victims

ISLAMABAD: The World Bank said on Saturday it is “envisaging” financing of $2 billion for Pakistan to rehabilitate and restore people’s lives following devastating floods that have killed over 1,600 people in the country since mid-June.   “We are deeply saddened by the loss of lives and livelihoods due to the devastating floods and we are working with the federal and provincial governments to provide immediate relief to those who are most affected,” Raiser was quoted as saying in a World Bank press release . “As immediate response, we are repurposing funds from existing World Bank-financed projects to support urgent needs in health, food, shelter, rehabilitation, and cash transfers,” he said.
