NEPRA releases report on January 23 power breakdown

ISLAMABAD: The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has released an inquiry report on a major power breakdown in the country that took place earlier this year, ARY News reported. On January 23, several parts of the country including Islamabad, Karachi, Lahore and Quetta had plunged into darkness as a high-tension electricity supply line between Quetta and Guddu caused a major power breakdown. As per the report, NTDC, Jinco Two Port Qasim Electric Power Company have been held responsible for the countrywide blackout. The Inquiry committee while highlighting the flaws in the power system said electricity generation was increased from wind power plants in the South, while in the North, hydel power generation was decreased. ‘I’d spend whole budget on Babar Azam’, says Anderson

LONDON: England veteran pacer James Anderson heaped praises on Babar Azam, saying he would spend the whole budget on the star Pakistan batter after none of the franchises picked him in the Hundred draft.  Babar was reserved a price of £100,000 for the draft but went unsold in the drafting process held last week. WASHINGTON: Principal Deputy Spokesperson at US State Department Vedant Patel said Pakistan is a sovereign country, which can take decisions freely. He was responding to a question regarding Pakistan’s non-participation in the Summit For Democaries in US, while addressing a press conference. Vedant Patel said: “We’re certainly sorry that Pakistan chose not to participate. But it is a sovereign state and it can make decisions for itself.” This certainly does not change our willingness to continue to work with Pakistan. Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Major Retired Ghulam Sarwar has filed an application for the registration of the First Information Report (FIR) against Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah, ARY News reported on Thursday. LHC nullifies Section 124A of Treason Act

LAHORE: The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Thursday declared Section 124A of the Treason Act null and void, ARY News reported. On March 14, the Lahore High Court (LHC) concluded a hearing over petitions against the sedition law and reserved its decision. LHC Justice Shahid Karim in his short order declared Section 124A in conflict with the constitution of Pakistan. ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Navy on Thursday exhibited an excellent display of firing surface-to-air missiles in the night. Pakistan Navy spokesperson said Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS) Admiral Muhammad Amjad Khan Niazi witnessed the firing of missiles by air defence units. ISLAMABAD: Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif said on Wednesday the Parliament was not usurping the powers of the Supreme Court but rather this house had been legislating as per its constitutional right. Participating in the debate on the legislative proposal related to judicial reforms, the defence minister said a bill resembling Supreme Court (Practice and Procedure) Bill 2023 was drafted 15 years ago but it was resisted by a bench of the apex court. Khawaja Asif said the Bill was not adding any parliamentarians but included judges from the Supreme Court. “We are diluting the powers of one individual and dividing it among three judges that need to be understood,” he added. ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court (SC) has deferred the hearing of suo motu cases and other constitutional petitions under Article 184(3) till the formulation of rules, ARY News reported on Wednesday. Justice Qazi Faez Isa-led three-member bench of the Supreme Court gave its ruling in a suo motu case related to awarding 20 additional marks to the Hafiz-e-Quran students for medical admission. As per the 9-page ruling written by Justice Qazi Faez Isa, the hearing of all cases under Article 184(3) was deferred until the formulation of rules by the parliament. He stated in the ruling that the Constitution and rules barred the Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) from constituting a special bench. KARACHI: A local court in Karachi on Wednesday acquitted Hassaan Niazi – the nephew of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan in a case for inciting people to revolt against national institutions, ARY News reported. ISLAMABAD: The European Commission has removed Pakistan from the list of its “High-Risk Third Countries”, Federal Commerce Minister Syed Naveed Qamar announced late Tuesday. In his Twitter post, Naveed Qamar said “EU has removed Pakistan from the List of High-Risk Third Countries. Pakistani businesses and individuals would no longer be subjected to ‘Enhanced Customer Due Diligence’ by European legal and economic operators.” Qamar noted that all credit goes to Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari for his tireless efforts. Law minister presents judicial reforms bill to NA

ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Law and Justice Azam Nazeer Tarar on Tuesday presented the judicial reforms bill which aimed to curtail the suo motu powers of the Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP), ARY News reported. Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar tabled the judicial reforms bill to the National Assembly (NA) after its approval from the federal cabinet. Under the new legislation, the decision for suo motu notice will be taken by three senior judges of the Supreme Court (SC) and they will have to fix the appeal within 14 days. SAHIWAL: A stamped during free flour distribution here left two women dead and 45 others injured, ARY News reported on Tuesday. ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief and former prime minister Imran Khan is booked in 29 cases in Islamabad, a report submitted to Islamabad High Court (IHC) showed on Tuesday.  Chief Justice IHC Justice Aamer Farooq heard the petition filed by Imran Khan seeking details of cases lodged against him in Islamabad. The details submitted by the State Counsel revealed that 28 cases were registered against the former prime minister at different police stations in the capital city while he was booked in one case by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA). ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) Monday released the party position after re-poll results in 15 districts of Sindh during LG polls, ARY News reported.  The polling in the first and second rounds of local bodies’ elections was stopped in various districts of Sindh. Islamabad police have finalised a plan to arrest Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) workers during former prime minister and PTI chief Imran Khan’s arrival in the federal capital, ARY News reported, citing sources.  As per details, the persons wanted during March 18 protests will likely be arrested by Islamabad police for which teams have been given tasks. The Islamabad police spokesman said that a meeting was held under the chairmanship of IG Islamabad in connection with Imran Khan’s appearance in the court, in which injured DIG operations, SSP operations and other senior officials were present. Pakistan reports 106 new cases of Covid-19 in 24 hours

ISLAMABAD: In last 24 hours 106 cases of COVID-19 reported in country and a patient of the disease died, the National Command and Operation Center (NCOC) said on Sunday. According to the NCOC, positivity ratio of the disease remained 2.52 in the country. In last 24 hours 4,213 Covid-19 tests conducted and 106 of them found positive, the NCOC shared in a statement. “A patient of the coronavirus died in last 24 hours,” according to the NCOC. “Twenty-two Covid patients have been in a precarious condition in the country.” The National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) recently recommended wearing masks at crowded and tightly enclosed spaces and healthcare facilities. Pakistan’s major airport shutdown for two months

NAWABSHAH: The Nawabshah airport has been closed for flight operations for two months, the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) said Sunday. According to the notification issued here, the airport will remain closed until May 23. The closure is due to a geotechnical study that needs to be carried out at the airport, it added. As a result, only helicopters will be able to land and take off at the Nawabshah airport until May 23. QUETTA: Lahore police have sought the custody of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan’s nephew – Barrister Hassan Khan Niazi, ARY News reported. Balochistan Home Department has penned down a letter to province’s Inspector-General (IG), instructing the latter to hand over Hasan Niazi to Lahore police. The Quetta police had registered a case against Hassan Khan Niazi for inciting violence and interfering in government affairs.
