Karachi policeman wounded for resisting robbery

KARACHI: A Karachi policeman sustained bullet wounds after a mugger opened fire for not stopping his motorcycle, ARY News reported on Monday. Police said that the firing incident took place in the vicinity of the Malir Cantt police station. Police detailed that the cop namely Farhan Mustafa was passing through the road with his wife on a motorcycle when muggers tried to stop him. The armed muggers opened fire at them after they refused to stop the motorcycle near Tank Chowk. The cop sustained injuries, however, his wife remained unhurt. The wounded cop was immediately shifted to a nearby hospital for medical assistance. Farhan Mustafa was deputed at 15 Airport. Govt to recruit hospital heads as per rules: Health Minister

ISLAMABAD: Caretaker Federal Minister for Health Dr Nadeem Jan on Monday said that the recruitment of heads of major hospitals would be undertaken as per recruitment rules, ARY News reported. The minister, in a media briefing, said that recruitments would be made strictly on merit following due process and procedure. “We make it clear we are working in accordance with law and all the recruitments will be made on merit in all hospitals.” Dr Nadeem said, “We want transparency to improve the health system.” He said that necessary instructions to initiate process for filling of the posts of various cadres had been issued. PM Kakar to take up Lahore smog issue with India

LAHORE: Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar on Monday assured the Punjab government of taking up the issue of the smog caused by the burning of crops with India at the diplomatic level. PM Anwaarul Haq Kakar, who chaired the meeting of Punjab cabinet, was told by Punjab Chief Minister Mohsin Raza Naqvi that the main reason for the spread of smog in Lahore was the burning of residues of crops in Indian Punjab, the state news agency reported. Pakistan decides ‘immediate deportation of illegal immigrants after arrest’

ISLAMABAD: The caretaker federal government has decided to immediately deport illegal immigrants after their arrests and special instructions have been given to the local administrations and police forces of all provinces, ARY News reported on Monday. Pakistan pulled up socks for deportation of illegal immigrants and decided direct deportation after their arrests. Following the cabinet’s approval, the interior ministry issued instructions to the police forces, law enforcement agencies (LEAs) and local administrations across the country. Customs intelligence unearths Rs3.5b tax fraud

KARACHI: Customs intelligence has unearthed the tax fraud worth Rs3.5 billion allegedly committed by a private company, ARY News reported on Friday. The Customs intelligence detected a Rs3.5 tax fraud in a company namely HSJI that cleared steel bars by deceiving Customs Collector Hyderabad without paying the taxes and duties. The Customs spokesperson said that the company would have faced fines, duties and taxes worth Rs3.5 billion. A First Information Report (FIR) was lodged by Customs intelligence, however, no recovery has been made from the company so far. ISLAMABAD: Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar on Thursday said that the government would appeal the Supreme Court’s decision against the trial of civilians in the military courts as it had “serious” implications, ARY News reported.  In interviews with two different private television channels, he said the law was promulgated by the parliament which was also the forum to change it but no one took up the issue there. ISLAMABAD: President Dr Arif Alvi said Wednesday that he has not received any response from the Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) provinces yet after sending letters to their governments. While talking to a private news channel, President Dr Arif Alvi said that he summoned Punjab and KP election commissioners but they did not come to meet him. He added that he had also written a letter to the law minister regarding elections but he replied that the president was unauthorised to question the election date. Australian university announces scholarships for Pakistan

Australia’s University of Wollongong (UOW) has extended its most prestigious Vice-Chancellor’s Leadership Scholarship for Pakistan. The Pakistan High Commission said in a statement that for the first time, an Australian university has offered such scholarships for Pakistan. The programme is aimed at inspiring a new generation of young, passionate leaders and providing them with the knowledge, skills, and worldviews to be future leaders. ISLAMABAD: Caretaker Minister for Information and Broadcasting Murtaza Solangi on Tuesday said peace was linked with Pakistan and Afghanistan and effective border management and security was in the interest of the peoples of both countries.
