Pakistan’s economy in ‘collapse’ as IMF visits

Pakistan is gripped by a major economic crisis, with the rupee plummeting, inflation soaring and energy in short supply as IMF officials visit to discuss a vital cash injection. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for months held out against the tax rises and subsidy slashing demanded by the International Monetary Fund, fearful of backlash ahead of elections due in October. Tanda Dam tragedy: Rescue teams fish out 10 more bodies of children

PESHAWAR: The rescue workers have recovered 10 more bodies of seminary students, who drowned in the Tanda Dam due to a boat capsized on Sunday, bringing the overall number to 30, ARY News reported.  According to Kohat District Police, 46 children, mostly aged between 8 to 10 years, were riding on the boat during a field trip when it overturned in the middle of the dam apparently due to overload. The rescue operation was suspended on Sunday evening due to cold and darkness, and resumed on Tuesday. Some 10 more bodies were recovered by the rescue teams. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Minister Khushdil Khan, who supervised the rescue operation said the operation would continue till the recovery of all dead bodies. UN chief condemns Peshawar blast

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has strongly condemned Monday’s suicide bombing at a mosque in Peshawar in which over 80 people were martyred and many more wounded, saying it was “particularly abhorrent” that the attack occurred at a place of worship. The death toll in the suicide bombing in the Police Lines mosque in Peshawar has climbed to 83 after 13 more dead bodies were retrieved from the wreckage by the rescue teams. “Freedom of religion or belief, including the ability to worship in peace and security, is a universal human right,” his Spokesman Stephane Dujarric said in a statement he read out at the regular noon briefing at UN Headquarters in New York. “The Secretary-General extends his heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and wishes a prompt recovery to those injured,” the statement said. IMF mission arrives in Islamabad for talks on ninth review

ISLAMABAD: An International Monetary Fund (IMF) mission has arrived in Islamabad to discuss the stalled ninth review of the $7 billion Extended Fund Facility (EFF), ARY News reported. Terrorist involved in martyrdom of intel officers ‘killed’

LAHORE: A terrorist, who was involved in the martyrdom of two intelligence officers in Khanewal, succumbed to injuries after getting arrested in injured condition by security forces, ARY News reported on Monday. Akmal to chair selection committee for age-group trials

LAHORE: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Monday, constituted an eight-member selection committee under the chairmanship of former Test wicketkeeper batter Kamran Akmal which will conduct U13, U16 and U19 trials for the selection of regional and district teams. Besides Akmal, the newly-constituted selection committee includes Sohail Tanvir, Amir Nazir, Taimoor Khan, Junaid Khan, Faisal Athar, Qaisar Abbas, Sanaullah Baloch. LAHORE: A petition has been filed in the Lahore High Court (LHC), challenging the recent hike in prices of petroleum products by the federal government, ARY News reported on Monday. Lal Haveli’s seven units sealed by ETPB

RAWALPINDI: The Evacuee Trust Property Board (ETPB) on Monday sealed seven units of Lal Haveli, the residence of Awami Muslim League (AML) chief and former interior minister Sheikh Rashid, ARY News reported. According to initial reports, the ETPB staff along with Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) and police personnel reached the residence of Sheikh Rashid to seal it in line with the court’s orders. Sukkur: 7-year-old burnt in acid attack by classmate

SUKKUR: In a horrific incident, a seven-year-old boy suffered burns in an acid attack by his classmate in a government school in Sukkur , ARY News reported on Friday. According to details, a seven-year-old boy – identified as Matiullah – suffered burn injuries when his classmate, Hasnain – a student of second grade – threw acid on him in the school. KARACHI: A police officer in Karachi shot himself and got injured as he attempted suicide over ‘unknown reason’, ARY News reported on Friday, quoting the police. According to details, the police officer named Khalid Hussain attempted suicide after shooting himself in the chest. He was later shifted to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. Court reserves verdict on Fawad Chaudhry’s remand

ISLAMABAD: The court of district and sessions judge on Friday reserved its verdict on extending the Physical remand of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Fawad Chaudhry in a case related to using ‘threatening language’ against the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) members. Fawad Chaudhry was produced before the court of judicial magistrate Waqas Raja under strict security. SBP’s Foreign exchange reserves plunge to $3.7 billion

KARACHI: The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) on Thursday said that the foreign exchange reserves have plunged by US $923 million to a mere $3.7 billion, ARY News reported. “During the week ended on 20-Jan-2023, SBP’s reserves decreased by US$ 923 million to US$ 3,678.4 million due to external debt repayments,” the central bank said in a statement issued on Thursday. The National Transmission and Despatch Company (NTDC) has finalised an initial inquiry report, revealing the reasons behind the power breakdown in several parts of Pakistan on Monday, January 23, ARY News reported. In a report, NTDC has determined the reasons behind the blackout, stating that the breakdown was caused due to fluctuation in frequency on January 23. The report said due to the tripping of 500KV lines, 11,356 MW of electricity disappeared from the NTDC system due to frequency fluctuation. Karachi police arrest female drug dealer

Karachi police on Thursday claimed to have arrested a female drug dealer in city’s Kemari area, ARY News reported, quoting sources. As per details, a female drug dealer named Nadia was arrested from Kemari Town and 3kg hashish was also recovered from her custody. ISLAMABAD: The Privatisation Commission (PC) Board approved the terms of reference for the hiring of a financial advisor for Roosevelt Hotel in its meeting session, ARY News reported on Wednesday. ECP says ‘expenses on general elections can exceed Rs55 billion’

ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has said that the expenses on the general and by-elections can exceed Rs55 billion if they are not held on the same day, ARY News reported on Tuesday. Sources said that the organisation of phase-wise general elections will exceed the estimated expenses of Rs55 billion. The election commission decided to write another letter to the federal government regarding the general elections’ expenses. Prior to the estimation of the election cost, the ECP had written a letter to the Centre regarding Rs47 billion in expenses for the organisation of the general elections on the same day. The Centre had also disbursed Rs5 billion to the election commission for the preparations for the general polls. Islamabad police prepare joint security plan for twin cities

The Capital police on Tuesday prepared a joint security plan for Islamabad and Rawalpindi, ARY News reported. The first meeting of the joint security coordination committee was held today in Islamabad and was attended by heads of law enforcement agencies (LEAs). The participants formulated a joint security strategy for the twin cities. They also agreed to strengthen mutual cooperation and decided to improve the exchange of information. Usman Anwar appointed new Punjab IGP

LAHORE: In a major bureaucratic reshuffle, the federal government has appointed Usman Anwar as new Punjab Inspector General (IG), and replaced Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Lahore Ghulam Muhammad Dogar with Bilal Siddique Kamyana, ARY News reported on Tuesday. The federal government removed Punjab IG Mohammad Aamir Zulfiqar Khan and instructed him to report to the Establishment Division in Islamabad. Dr Usman Anwar was performing his duties as Additional Inspector General (AIG) Motorway Police.  Usman Anwar has previously been posted as an Additional IG Special Branch in Punjab.
