Bangladesh thwart UAE but India, Australia reach U19 Women’s T20 WC semis

POTCHEFSTROOM: Bangladesh bowlers decimated the United Arab Emirates (UAE) batting lineup for a mere 69/9 before Shorna Akter propelled her side to a thumping five-wicket triumph in their last fixture of the ongoing ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup.

Bangladesh’s resounding victory over the UAE, however, turned out to be insufficient for the side as India and Australia advanced to the semi-finals despite having the same number of points (six) due to a better net run rate.

UAE batting lineup suffered a ruthless attack by Bangladesh’s bowlers and could post 69/9 in their allotted 20 overs, after opting to bat first.

Opening batter Lavanya Keny remained the lone warrior for UAE with the bat as she scored a fighting 29 off 46, while Mahika Gaur remained the notable run-getter with a cautious 17.

The rest of the UAE batters, on the other hand, failed to amass the double figures.

Rabeya Khan led the bowling attack for Bangladesh with three wickets with Marufa Akter following with two. Dipa Khatun, Reya Akter Shika and Shorna made one scalp each.

Set to chase a mere 70, Bangladesh amassed the total in just the 10th over in a bid to get their net run rate past New Zealand but failed.

Shorna top-scored for Bangladesh in the run chase with a brisk 38 off just 19 balls, hitting four boundaries and two sixes.

Opener Afia Prottasha (15) and Rabyea (14) also chipped in for Bangladesh in pursuit.

Samaira Dharnidharka and Indhuja Nandakumar bagged two wickets each for UAE, while Mahika Gaur struck out a batter.

Meanwhile, in another Super Six clash, England outclassed West Indies by a massive margin of 95 runs and finished at the top of the group standings and had already booked their spot in the semis.

AFP explains what the monsoon is, why it is so important and yet so dangerous, and how climate change and other man-made effects may be altering the vast life-giving but destructive annual weather system. What is the South Asian monsoon? The Southwest or the Asian Summer Monsoon is essentially a colossal sea breeze that brings South Asia 70-80 percent of its annual rainfall between June and September every year. It occurs when summer heat warms the landmass of the subcontinent, causing the air to rise and sucking in cooler Indian Ocean winds which then produce enormous volumes of rain. Why it is important? The monsoon is vital for agriculture and therefore for the livelihoods of millions of farmers and for food security in the poor region of around two billion people. But it brings destruction every ye...

ISLAMABAD: The Capital Development Authority (CDA) on Monday removed a recently installed ‘Golden Hands’ sculpture located along Margalla Avenue in Islamabad. Installed by a private developer, the sculpture quickly gained widespread attention on social media, sparking debate, memes, and a wave of speculation over its symbolism. Soon after its installation, the monument became the subject of intense online discussion. Social media users assigned various meanings to the structure with many interpreting it as a symbol of Pakistan’s rising global presence while others saw it as an ambitious but misplaced artistic expression. Amid the growing online buzz, CDA officials reportedly sprang into action. Initially, the sculpture was covered with cloth in an apparent attempt to minimize public reaction. Later, the structure was dismantled and removed using heavy machinery and labour teams. The ...
