Barcelona thrash Real Betis to move closer to LaLiga title

BARCELONA: Andreas Christensen, Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha scored goals as Barcelona outclassed 10-man Real Betis 4-0 on Saturday to consolidate their position at the top and moved a step closer to their 27th LaLiga title. Pakistan Railways announces big discount on new train service

Pakistan Railways has announced a 20 percent discount on the Shalimar train service starting from Labour Day (May 1), ARY News reported. In a statement, PR said that a 20 percent discount has been allotted on the tickets on Shalimar Express from 1st to 15th May. Meanwhile, the passengers will get discount of up to 20% on all classes of the Shalimar Express from May 1 to 15, “10 percent discount can be vailed on tickets for May 16-31,” Pakistan Railways announced. Karachi’s population rises to over 17.6 million: PBS data

KARACHI: The Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) on Sunday released latest figures of the ongoing seventh population census, ARY News reported. According to the official statistics released by the authorities, Karachi’s population had increased by 1.6 million to rise over 17.6 million, according to the latest figures. Moreover, Sindh’s population has jumped by 6.46 million to reach 54.31 million. Hyderabad division came in second with a population count of 10.19 million people, followed by Larkana division with 7.9 million people. Sukkur division had a population count of 6.19 million people, while Shaheed Benazirabad division had a count of 5.9 million. The smallest division in terms of population was Mirpurkhas, with a count of 4.9 million populace. LAHORE: Another case has been registered against Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) President and Punjab chief minister (CM) Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi, ARY News reported on Saturday. LAHORE: The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has decided to continue negotiations with the government regarding the framework for elections of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) within the bounds of the Constitution, ARY News reported on Saturday. Pakistan’s short-term inflation remains above 45pc

ISLAMABAD: The weekly inflation, measured by Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI), witnessed an increase of 0.15pc to jump to 46.82pc on a year-on-year basis for the week ending on April 27. The SPI for the week under review in the above-mentioned group was recorded at 252.20 points as compared to 251.83 points during the past week, according to the PBS data. As compared to the corresponding week of last year, the SPI for the combined consumption group in the week under review witnessed an increase of 46.82 percent. During the week, out of 51 items, prices of 21 (41.17%) items increased, 07 (13.73%) items decreased and 23 (45.10%) items remained stable. The items, which recorded an increase in their average prices on a week-on-week (WoW), included Potatoes (8.22%), Chicken (1.75%), Wheat Flour (1.55%), Gur (1.23%), Bread (1.13%) and Rice Irri-6/9 (1.01%). Karachi likely to face severe load shedding

KARACHI: Karachi is likely to face severe load shedding as the K-Electric lost a record Rs 39.4 billion in the first 9 months of the fiscal year 2022-23, ARY News reported on Saturday.  As per details, the K-Electric losses in the 9 months of 2021-22 were Rs 1.49 billion.  The economic crisis resulted in less consumption of K-Electric units as 5.8 percent fewer units were consumed in the current fiscal year as compared to the last fiscal year.  The K-Electric has also seen a decline in bill payments amid the current inflation. Police fail to arrest Pervaiz Elahi in late-night raid

LAHORE: The Anti-Corruption Establishment (ACE) team along with a heavy contingent of Punjab Police on Friday raided former Punjab Chief Minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) President Pervaiz Elahi’s house, located at Zahoor Elahi Road in Lahore. At least 25 individuals, including servants working in the household of the former Punjab chief minister, were arrested by the police during the raid. The eight-hour-long police action came to a halt after the Director General of Punjab’s Anti-Corruption Establishment (ACE), Sohail Zafar Chattha, left the scene along with the police contingent. Govt extends digital census for fifth time

The federal government has failed to complete the digital census process once again and made an extension for the fifth time, ARY News reported on Friday. After another extension, the digital census process will be concluded on May 15 now. The population census was due to be concluded in early April but it was extended four times earlier. Federal Minister for Planning and Development Ahsan Iqbal said that the seventh population census and first digital census of the country is underway. Rescue teams recover another body from Manora Beach

KARACHI: Rescue teams on Thursday recovered another body of a young man, who drowned at Manora Beach during picking, ARY News reported. Sukkur: Two die as fire erupts in Karachi Express

SUKKUR: Two persons were burnt to death when Karachi Express caught fire in Khairpur in the wee hours of Thursday night, ARY news reported. According to Pakistan Railways authorities, the train travelling from Karachi to Lahore suddenly caught fire midway when one of cabins started blazing near Tando Masti, Khairpur. Nine picnickers killed in Thatta road accident

THATTA: At least nine picnickers were killed when a vehicle they were travelling in rammed into a truck on Hyderabad-Thatta road near Chilya, ARY News reported on Wednesday. According to rescue sources, the incident occurred near Thatta’s Chilya area when a van collided with a truck, resulting in the death of nine people. Eight people died on the spot while another succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. Mastermind of bank robbery in Miranshah arrested

MIRANSHAH: Security forces have arrested the mastermind of the gang involved in looking at a bank in Miranshah, ARY News reported on Monday. As per details, a raid was conducted in Miranshah, North Waziristan and the mastermind Naseer Ullah was arrested by the intelligence agencies.  He revealed that he was given the responsibility of providing weapons and vehicles for looting banks. The Miranshah police had earlier conducted a raid against the robbers on March 20 but they managed to flee the spot of the incident. ISLAMABAD: The cyber-crime branch of the Federal Investigation Agency in a raid arrested six members of a fraud gang, ARY News reported on Monday. The accused were depriving citizens of their finances by introducing themselves as bank employees to get access to their personal data. “They transferred Rs. 19,58,500 from the bank account of the complainant,” FIA Rawalpindi spokesperson said. “Arrested accused have been named as Farooq, Umar Usman, Noman, Irfan, Aslam and Adnan,” FIA stated. “They were using modern technology to call their victims,” FIA said. “The FIA has recovered seven mobile phones from the accused and a case has been registered under the PECA Act,” spokesperson added.
