Ashura being observed across Pakistan amid tight security

Ashura being observed across Pakistan amid tight security

Ashura, the 10th of Muharram, is being observed across the country with due solemnity on Saturday to pay homage to Hazrat Imam Hussain (R.A) and other martyrs of Karbala amid strict security.

The day marks the undeterred resilience of the Prophet’s (PBUH) grandson, Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA), his family and devoted companions who all fought to uphold Islam amid opposition and cruelty.

In this connection, mourning processions are being taken out in all cities and towns of the country.

Ulema and zakireen will highlight various aspects of the Karbala tragedy in their sermons.

Elaborate security arrangements have been made across the nation to avoid any untoward incident and offer safety to mourners during the processions.

Meanwhile, mobile signals remain shut in several cities following interior ministry’s directions to the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) seeking suspension of mobile services not only on Muharram 9 and 10, but 11 as well.

Pillion riding has been banned in many cities across the country.

Karachi

The main Ashura procession in the city was taken out from Nishtar Park and will conclude at Hussainian Iranian Imambargah in Kharadar.

Lahore

The main procession in the city emerged from Nisar Haveli and will conclude at Karbala Gamay Shah in the evening. Sabeels of water, milk and tea have been set up along the route of the procession in remembrance of the famine-like situation faced by Hazrat Imam Hussain (R.A) and his companions.

Peshawar

In Peshawar, the central procession of Ashra was taken out from Imam Bargah Agha Syed Ali Shah Qissa Khwani Bazaar.

Pakistan floods: South Asia’s monsoon explained

Floods in Pakistan have killed more than 1,000 people after what its climate change minister called a record unbroken cycle of monsoon rains with “8 weeks of non-stop torrents”. AFP explains what the monsoon is, why it is so important and yet so dangerous, and how climate change and other man-made effects may be altering the vast life-giving but destructive annual weather system. What is the South Asian monsoon? The Southwest or the Asian Summer Monsoon is essentially a colossal sea breeze that brings South Asia 70-80 percent of its annual rainfall between June and September every year. It occurs when summer heat warms the landmass of the subcontinent, causing the air to rise and sucking in cooler Indian Ocean winds which then produce enormous volumes of rain. Why it is important? The monsoon is vital for agriculture and therefore for the livelihoods of millions of farmers and for food security in the poor region of around two billion people. But it brings destruction every ye...
