Disheartened farmer offers free cauliflower with cold drinks to public

Viral, Cauliflower, Farmer, Pakistan

SHAKARGARH: In a viral incident mirroring a similar one in Narowal, a farmer in Shakargarh vegetable market gave away cauliflower for free after being disheartened by its plummeting price of Rs50 per maund, ARY News reported.

Reports reveal that the farmer distributed over a maund of cauliflower at no cost and even offered cold drinks along with the vegetables, leaving citizens in the market rushing to fill their bags with the free produce.

Frustrated by the unstable market prices, the farmer urged authorities to take steps to stabilise rates in vegetable markets, as the viral incident highlighted the dire financial challenges farmers are facing.

Earlier, a farmer named Mudasir, in Punjab went viral when he was was forced to distribute 50 maund of cauliflower free of cost due to the drastically low prices of vegetables in the market after a bumper crop.

Despite a bumper harvest, farmers in Punjab are struggling with severe financial distress as vegetable prices have plunged in markets across the province over the past week, leaving them unable to recover even the basic costs of cultivation.

Prices of staple vegetables like cauliflower, cabbage, spinach, and tomatoes have plummeted to as low as Rs 2 to 10 per kg in wholesale markets. Middlemen are unwilling to offer farmers fair prices due to the low demand and increased supply, compelling many growers to take drastic measures.

In a rare case in Narowal, a farmer was left with no choice but to distribute his cauliflower crop in frustration as the market price was only Rs 2 per kg.

The disheartened farmer from Sadiq Abad, distributed 50 maund of cauliflower free of cost.

He said that the price in the market is only Rs2 per kg while just the basic cost of cultivation was around Rs30 to 40 thousand.

Mudasir said it is better to distribute the crop free of cost rather than selling it at a loss. He demanded the government abolish taxes on fertilizers and electricity bills to help farmers like him who are struggling to make a living.

According to a report, the agriculture sector of Pakistan has missed an opportunity to benefit from the bumper crops leaving farmers to bear the brunt of the low prices.

Pakistan floods: South Asia’s monsoon explained

Floods in Pakistan have killed more than 1,000 people after what its climate change minister called a record unbroken cycle of monsoon rains with “8 weeks of non-stop torrents”. AFP explains what the monsoon is, why it is so important and yet so dangerous, and how climate change and other man-made effects may be altering the vast life-giving but destructive annual weather system. What is the South Asian monsoon? The Southwest or the Asian Summer Monsoon is essentially a colossal sea breeze that brings South Asia 70-80 percent of its annual rainfall between June and September every year. It occurs when summer heat warms the landmass of the subcontinent, causing the air to rise and sucking in cooler Indian Ocean winds which then produce enormous volumes of rain. Why it is important? The monsoon is vital for agriculture and therefore for the livelihoods of millions of farmers and for food security in the poor region of around two billion people. But it brings destruction every ye...
